Master of Science Degree in Counseling, Student Affairs

The  Master of Science Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Student Affairs is designed to prepare effective educational counselors to work in student service positions within collegiate settings.

The 4-semester, 43 unit program can be completed in two years while attending full-time. Students may extend their program for up to 7 years according to university regulations.

The courses include core educational counseling classes, specialty classes, and a 600-hour field experience lasting one year. All courses for the degree are conveniently offered  weekdays after 5:00 pm on the Bakersfield campus.

Extensive field-based experience is woven throughout the curriculum. Examples of fieldwork placements include: Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Student Activities, and Residential Life.

EDCS 5130: Multicultural Counseling (3 units)
EDCS 5150: Crisis Counseling (3 units)
EDCS 5240: Student Affairs Practicum II (2 units)

EDCS 6260: Student Affairs Fieldwork I (3 units)

Applications for the next admission cycle (Fall 2026) open October 1st and are due March 1, 2026. Please note that EDCS only admits students one time per year.
