Research
Dr. Haney's research centers on the historical interpretation of European art music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has spoken and published on programmatic meaning in Felix Mendelssohn's music and on Paul Hindemith's compositional development in relation to debates over German modernism after World War I, stressing Hindemith's reaction against nationalism and alliances with the non-Germanic projects of Debussy, Stravinsky, and Bart贸k. Currently, he is asking how Hindemith's chamber compositions might configure their performers into meaningful human relationships, applying concepts from jazz research and drawing parallels between performance processes, Hindemith's socially-grounded thinking, and Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue. Dr. Haney is a past Vice President and Program Chair of the Pacific-Southwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society.

In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Haney is heavily involved in community outreach through events like the annual 糖心Vlog视频 Chamber Music Workshop. He also gives music lectures in the broader Bakersfield community, including annual prep lectures for high school students participating in the United States Academic Decathlon. Activities like these led to his receiving the 2013 College & University Music Educator of the Year Award from the Kern County Music Educators Association.
